People are heavily exposed to disinformation in their everyday lives with the evolution of communication technologies and the rise in digitalization today. The ease of access to the media worldwide has also brought the selection of local and international sources to the agenda. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that the use of foreign or second language (L2) influences people's decision-making. In addition to the views that L2 enables more reflective and deliberate thinking, it is reported that people are less affected by emotional associations in their L2. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate how English translation and interpreting students distinguish between fake and real news in L1 and L2. To this end, a collection of fake and real news was prepared in Turkish and English. The students were instructed to read the news and respond to the relevant questions related to each news article. The analysis included the students’ educational background, knowledge about the agenda, and use of the Internet and social media as well as the language of the news, the source and the content of the news. The results showed that the language of news influenced the credibility of the news sources for the English translation and interpreting students.
