Abstract

In this study, "Birds without wings" by Louis De Bernières and Turkish translation of the book by Bahar Öcal Düzgören will be examined comparatively with ethnomethodological methods. The book called "Birds without wings" is essentially a fictional translation. Because the events in the novel take place in a small coastal town of South West Anatolia in the last days of the Ottoman Empire, but it was narrated in English. In this story, which is told by a foreign writer, social contradictions within the framework of dualities such as Muslim-Christian, Turkish-Greek were narrated. These contradictions were essentially patterned in the work with social emphases such as love, death, friendship, hostility, belief, and knowledge. In this context, ethnomethodology can be used to analyze this fictional novel based on real stories and its translation. The basic concepts of ethnomethodology (1) the members’ methods: documentary method, (2) reflexivity and (3) indexical expressions will be used to analyze at this study. Both source text and target text will be compared and evaluated with ethnomethodological conceptual inquiries. It will be tried to explain how the translator has makde decisions by interacting with the source text. In order to limit the study, a classification has been made considering some daily topics. In addition to these topics it has been tried to present examples from two different cultures narrated in the book. In this way, it is aimed to show that their context is essentially different, but events are on the same subject and characters in the novel live in a similar way. Besides that, by comparing the source text and translation, it has been tried to determine whether there is a transformation between different cultures through translation. The titles used for classification in the study are as follows: Language, belief, knowledge, power, friendship, and hostility.
