READING MOTIVATIONS OF 7TH AND 8TH GRADE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS FOR TEXTS

Abstract

Reading and comprehension process is affected by different variables such as quality of reading source, reading atmosphere and motivation. Motivation is a mental factor that activates the individuals and then directs and enables them to achieve results. Reading motivation, which stands out in the research, is an important concept that draws the boundaries of the students' desire to read and maintains this skill. This concept is also important for improving students' reading skills. From this point of view, it was tried to determine the reading motivation levels of the middle school students who were in the acquisition stage of the reading skill for the texts in the Turkish course textbooks. The study group consisted of 209 7th and 8th grade students studying in Antalya city centre. The data were collected by using “Reading Motivation Scale for Texts” developed by Aydemir and Öztürk (2012). SPSS 21.0 package program was used to analyse the collected data. The scale was simultaneously administered to the students in both classes. According to the analysis results, it was found that reading motivations of 8th grade students on texts in Turkish course books were higher than 7th grade students. However, there is no significant difference in terms of the gender of the students participating in the research. Finally, it was found that there was no significant difference among students' reading motivations in terms of their educational levels when the results about the school the parents of7th and 8th grade students graduated.
