Abstract

The terms are used in the fields of expertise and facilitate communication between people working in these fields. Legal texts are also specialized texts where the terms of the field are frequently used and one of the important problems encountered in the translation of these texts is the term problem. The fact that some terms in this field are semantically close to each other or they have neither equivalent nor exact equivalent in the target language and culture is one of the important problems faced by translators during the translation process. In Turkish and French legal language, terms that are very close to the term crime are used. When Turkish and French legal language compared, we are facing with the equivalence problem in the translation of the relevant terms due to the differences in the legal systems of these countries. The study aims to examine the terms meaning crime in the legal language of both countries, to identify the problems faced by translators in the process of translating these terms to the target language, to discuss the equivalence problems in translation and to propose solutions to the problems encountered.
