Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study is to adapt the Emotional Intelligence Scale developed by Tauck Family Foundation and Child Trends (2014) into Turkish. The scale was developed for primary and secondary school teachers to increase their students' achievement by measuring their emotional competence levels. The original form of the scale consists of 14 items and four factors. In this study, firstly, the scale was translated by language and department experts, and the Turkish form was finalized according to expert opinions. In this study, which has two separate forms as teacher and student, 14-question and four-dimensional student form was used. The pilot study was conducted with 47 students. After the pilot study, item 8 was removed and the scale was adapted to three dimensions. The dimensions that emerged in the scale were called “self-control”, “academic competence and determination”, “task and goal-oriented”. In actual practice, the study group consists of 380 students. The reliability coefficient for the first dimension of the scale α = 0.828; 0.897 for the second dimension and 0.893 for the third dimension. The reliability coefficient for the overall scale was α = 0.943. While the emotional intelligence levels of the first dimension were moderate, the intelligence levels of the next two dimensions were found to be high. The general emotional intelligence levels of the students were also found to be high. As a result of the analyzes, it was found that the Turkish version of the scale was valid and reliable for this research group.
