Abstract

The Callan method is a method that aims to develop students’ target language speaking skills by having them answer questions fluently and accurately. It was developed to teach a target language rapidly and effectively. In this study, the effect of the method on students’ ability to use the target language fluently and accurately in teaching Turkish as a foreign language was investigated. The research was designed as a case study. The study group consisted of 18 students from 13 countries who were learning Turkish at the Abant İzzet Baysal University TÖMER center in the 2015-2016 academic year. The Callan method was used to enable the students to talk at the A2 and B1 levels and to correct their mistakes while speaking at the B2 and C1 levels. Verbally answering questions following reading texts and speaking about the topic being covered were the activities in which the method was used. The results revealed that that the students’ rapid response and question asking skills at the A2 and B1 levels, and fluent speaking and accurate word pronunciation skills at the B2 and C1 levels improved.
