MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT’IN KADIN HAKLARININ GEREKÇELENDİRİLMESİ ESERİ IŞIĞINDA VIRGINIA WOOLF’UN DENİZ FENERİ ROMANINDA KADIN TEMSİLİNE DAİR BİR İNCELEME

Abstract
Bu çalışma, Virginia Woolf’un To the Lighthouse (Deniz Feneri) başlıklı eserini, Mary Wollstonecraft’ın A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (Kadın Haklarının Gerekçelendirilmesi) metninde ortaya koyduğu temel fikirler doğrultusunda feminist edebiyat kuramı çerçevesinde incelemektedir. Feminist kuramın kadın deneyimlerini görünür kılma, ataerkil söylemlerin metinsel örgütlenmesini analiz etme ve kadın karakterlerin ideolojik temsil biçimlerini sorgulama yönündeki ilkeleri, Woolf’un romanındaki kadın figürlerine yönelik analitik bir zemin sunmaktadır. Bu bağlamda çalışma, Wollstonecraft’ın kadınların eğitimi, aklın özgürleştirici kapasitesi, evlilik kurumunun kadın üzerindeki yapısal baskıları ve kadınların nesneleştirilmesine ilişkin değerlendirmelerini Mrs. Ramsay ve Lily Briscoe karakterleri üzerinden karşılaştırmalı olarak ele almaktadır. Analizler, eserde geleneksel kadınlık normlarının sürdürüldüğü alanlarla modern bireysel kadın kimliğinin inşa edildiği noktalar arasındaki gerilimi ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. İnceleme sonucunda Mrs. Ramsay’in özverili eş ve anne rolüyle ataerkil düzenin istikrarını temsil ettiği; buna karşılık Lily Briscoe’nun sanatsal yaratıcılığı, bağımsızlık talebi ve toplumsal normlardan bilinçli kopuşuyla feminist bir özneleşme sürecini yansıttığı belirlenmiştir. Romanda toplumsal beklentilere koşulsuz uyum gösteren kadınların mutsuzluk ya da ölümle karşılaşması, Woolf’un patriyarkal yapılara yönelik eleştirel tavrının altını çizen bir anlatı stratejisi olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Sonuç olarak çalışma, To the Lighthouse’un yalnızca Wollstonecraft’ın düşüncelerini yansıtan bir metin olmadığını; aynı zamanda kadınların geleneksel rollerini sorgulamalarına, bireysel kimliklerini yeniden tanımlamalarına ve modern feminist bilincin imkânlarını keşfetmelerine olanak tanıyan dönüştürücü bir feminist metin olarak konumlandığını göstermektedir.

This study examines Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse through the theoretical lens of feminist literary criticism, drawing specifically on Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. The core principles of feminist literary theory—making women’s experiences visible, exposing the mechanisms through which patriarchal structures operate within narrative forms, and interrogating the ideological dimensions of female representation—provide a critical framework for interpreting Woolf’s portrayal of women. Within this context, the study analyzes Wollstonecraft’s arguments concerning women’s education, the liberating potential of reason, the structural constraints imposed by the institution of marriage, and the objectification of women, and explores how these themes resonate with the characterizations of Mrs. Ramsay and Lily Briscoe. The analysis aims to illuminate the narrative tension between traditional constructions of femininity and the emerging model of the modern, autonomous woman. Findings indicate that Mrs. Ramsay embodies the continuity of patriarchal norms through her idealization as a devoted wife and mother, while Lily Briscoe represents a counter-discourse grounded in artistic autonomy, individual agency, and resistance to prescriptive gender roles. Furthermore, the narrative pattern in which women who conform uncritically to societal expectations encounter emotional suffering or symbolic erasure underscores Woolf’s critical stance toward entrenched patriarchal systems. In conclusion, the study argues that To the Lighthouse does not merely reproduce Wollstonecraft’s philosophical positions but functions as a transformative feminist text. By challenging conventional gender roles and foregrounding women’s attempts to redefine their identities, the novel creates a literary space through which modern feminist consciousness can emerge and evolve.
