Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine Turkish language teachers’ assessments of the types of literacy included in the ‘Turkey Century’ Education Model and the 2024 Turkish Language Curriculum. The study was conducted within the framework of a phenomenological research design, one of the qualitative research approaches. The participants in the study comprised 20 Turkish language teachers working in XXXX province during the 2024–2025 academic year. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview form prepared by the researchers; the data obtained were analyzed using content analysis. The findings indicate that teachers view the Turkey Century Education Model (TYMM) as a comprehensive educational model centered on values, virtues and action; one that emphasizes national and spiritual elements and integrates the past with the future. Teachers have identified the following as positive features of the 2024 Turkish Language Curriculum: its simpler structure, its focus on core language skills, its adoption of a student-centered approach, and its inclusion of support and enrichment activities tailored to different levels of learning. However, criticisms of the curriculum included implementation-related difficulties, a reduction in the number of grammar topics, the introduction of concepts unfamiliar to teachers, and the absence of any corresponding changes to the examination system. It was also found that teachers’ knowledge of the different types of literacy is limited, although they consider these skills to be necessary and practical in today’s context. In light of these findings, it has been recommended that in-service training for teachers be increased, that the program be developed in line with feedback from those implementing it, and that greater emphasis be placed on the different types of literacy within the program.
