Polysemous verbs are linguistic units that refer to more than one concept and have different meanings. In Turkish language teaching, identifying the meanings of polysemous verbs that exhibit prototypical features facilitates vocabulary instruction. This study aims to determine the prototype meanings of the polysemous verb “al-” among 5th and 8th grade middle school children who are native speakers of Turkish within the framework of Prototype Theory and to compare these meanings with the prototype meanings of “al-” in the Turkish National Corpus (TNC). The data consisted of 417 sentences produced with the verb “al-” by 172 students in grades 5 and 8 from three different middle schools and 1449 concordance lines containing “al-” obtained from TNC. The study was conducted using a qualitative research design, and the data were examined through document analysis. In the first stage, the students wrote three sentences using the verb “al-” within the framework of Prototype Theory, and the prototype meanings were examined. In the second stage, the data obtained from TNC were analyzed using a corpus-based approach to identify the most frequently used prototype meanings of “al-”. The findings revealed that the prototype meaning of “al-” in the children’s mental lexicon was “to buy” whereas its prototype meaning in TNC was “to remove or lift something from its place by holding it with the hand or another instrument”. Thus, the most frequently used prototype meaning in the corpus differs from that in the children’s mental lexicon. This finding indicates that the prototype meaning in children’s mental lexicon and the most frequently used prototype meaning in the corpus do not always occur in the same order. Consequently, considering not only corpus frequencies but also the prototype meanings in the target group’s mental lexicon may contribute to vocabulary instruction in teaching polysemous verbs.
