Abstract

Sait Faik Abasıyanık is one of the most prolific literary figures in Turkish literature. Hence, there are many studies dwelling on Sait Faik’s works. These studies foreground the role Sait Faik plays in Contemporary Turkish Short Story tradition. His works are deeply scrutinized in terms of themes, characters, and social aspect. However, Sait Faik points to his poetical identity in Turkish literary history by publishing a book of his poems short before his death. The poems published in a book in 1953 under the title Şimdi Sevişme were published in various magazines. The book was extended following his death; and the poems that remain in magazines as well as the ones in his private archive were added to this collection and published by various publishing houses. This study intends to draw attention to Sait Faik’s poetical side. This study initially deals with Sait Faik’s thoughts on arts, literature, and poetry. It was seen that there were changes and conflicts in these thoughts over time. Sait Faik’s adventure of poetry was traced back to his earliest poems. It was seen that his earliest poems reflected the influence of people with various understandings from Republican period. His own poetical identity was formed after throwing these influences off. Next, his poems were thematically analyzed. His main themes were revealed to be the passion of writing, love, devotion to life, and human beings. This thematic limitation conforms to the attitude in Sait Faik’s stories, and it is because he deals with similar themes and adopts the same style in his poems.
