Abstract

In the next few decades, we can foresee that the prestige of Turkish o a significant increase in the number of people who want to learn Turkish. However, it has not yet established whether the methods and approaches of grammar teaching methods applied in Turkish teaching are in a compatible situation enough to meet this universal demand. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to investigate whether grammar teaching methods, approaches and course materials applied in the field of Turkish teaching are compatible with the modern and universal grammar approaches. In this context, contemporary theoretical approaches were researched and brought into discussion in order to develop genuine teaching methods and learning strategies which are expected to contribute to the learning of Turkish as a Lingua Franca in a more effective way and a shorter time. It was concluded that Turkish language is not sufficiently learnable enough for the students with different first languages living outside Turkey due to some theoretical, methodological, pedagogical and hardware deficiencies. It was also found that in Turkey, studies in this field has been limited to theoretical and practical studies on teaching of Turkish to foreigners living in Turkey and is generally evaluated in the field of 'Teaching Turkish to Foreigners'. However, in this study, linguistic and methodological studies carried out in order to teach Turkish to people from different nations and different places in the world easily as a Lingua Franca were suggested to be classified under 'Turkish Language Teaching' or ‘Turkish as a Foreign Language’. In addition, the traditional Turkish grammar modules used in Turkish teaching were redefined with Universal Grammar modules compatible with the international terminology commonly used in the field of foreign language teaching or linguistics. This study will make an important contribution to the adoption of the Turkic languages among the languages of the world in terms of tools and materials, textbooks, learnability, teachability and accessibility and preparation for the future.
