Abstract

Swearing is considered a prerequisite for starting a new job. Many occupational groups in Turkey swear before starting a job. In the context of research, how are these texts formed in syntactic and semantic terms? In which environment and when does the conversation take place? What is the relationship between the speaker and the recipient? What are the linguistic features of these texts? Why does one swear or are these texts legally binding? This study has tried to answer such questions. The purpose of the study is to analyze the approach of the swearing person to the recipient and the type of language that he/she uses to make an impact upon the recipient. Discourse analysis method was used in the research. The attitude of the speaker who completed his speech, I swear was dealt in the framework of the theory of enunciation. In the words of Benveniste, the question of how the “reciprocal relationship between the speaker-language-context” is realized? As a result of the examination of the oath texts, it has been observed that these texts have a specific arrangement and the selection of lexical items is treated meticulously according to the position and purpose of the person who oaths. It has been seen that each text of the oath is expressed by a certain group. It has been also found that the content of the texts is constructed in such a way that will make the words of the speaker believable and have a significant effect upon the recipient.
