Abstract

Language is the most effective communication tool humans use and the usage of the language is shaped on four basic skills. These are reading, writing, listening and speaking. Listening ability is of the first learning and the most exposed ability of the individual. In teaching a language, while reading, writing and speaking are seen as improbable abilities, unfortunately listening is mostly seen as an ability acquired before so it has been pushed aside. As a result of this, it can be said that the least studied field is listening. In teaching Turkish to foreigners, one of the most used materials is course books.Besides reading, writing and speaking activities, listening activity is included in the course books. In this study, Yunus Emre Institution Turkish Teaching Set Prepared For Basic Level Course Book and New English File Elementary English Course Book were compared in terms of listening activities. In these two course books, it was focused on the convenience of specified criterias for A1 basic level listening skills taken place in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It was also focused on whether the listening activities support other basic skills, which activities were used during listening process and whether cultural items are taken place in listening activities. It is hoped that a more qualified preparation of the course books contribute to teaching Turkish as a foreign language.
